SUNNE
LUTHERAN YOUTH VISIT NYC!!!
Sunne Lutheran Youth
recently returned from New York City where they had traveled on
their 2009 Faith Adventure. The group of 29 spent a week doing
service projects, taking in New York, and seeing the sights.
Traveling by charter bus, the 30-hour ride to New York was broken up
by a stop in Chicago to tour the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America's headquarters and to enjoy Chicago style pizza at
Giordano's Pizza.
While in New York, the group helped several different organizations
with various projects. At a Catholic Charities site, the group
helped sort and arrange items in a thrft shop. At Salam
Lutheran Church, the group learned about Arab-American Lutherans and
helped with a food pantry. At a Lutheran Social Services
school for the emotionally disturbed children, the group helped with
a yard and garden project. At the Kehilat Shepahardim Jewish
Center, the group helped hand out food to hundreds of peole and
learned about Bukarian Jews from the Center's rabbi. Many of
the projects claimed that North Dakotans were the best workers they
had experienced.
The group stayed at the Seafarer's International House, just off
Union Square in Manhattan. While there, they learned about
chaplaincy programs for those who work on the large freighters that
sail around the world.
The group also took in a number of sights. They at at
Chinatown and Little Italy, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge,
toured Ground Zero, took the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue
of Liberty, went to the top of the Empire State Building, spent time
in Times Square and Rockefeller Center, went to the NBC Today Show,
rode the Cyclone and swam in the Atlantic Ocean at Coney Island,
toured the birth home of Theodore Roosevelt, saw Trump Tower and the
Plaza Hotel, rode the subway a lot, and saw various other sights.
While everyone was happy to be back in North Daktoa away from the
crowds and noise of New York, everyone agreed that this was an
"awesome" experience. A few are even looking forward to going
back sometime.
