SUNNE LUTHERAN
YOUTH RETURNS FROM 2011 SEATTLE FAITH ADVENTURE
What was supposed to be a train
ride to Seattle turned into a charter bus ride when Amtrak canceled
all passenger service out of Minot about 36 hours before the group
was set to leave. Scrambling for transportation, the thirty six
members of Sunne Lutheran Youth were able to line up a charter bus
and head out to Seattle for a week of service, learning and
exploring.
The group arrived at All Pilgrim’s Christian Church just in time to
help serve a community meal to homeless people from Capitol Hill
part of Seattle. The next morning the group served meals at the
Union Gospel Men’s Mission, the Union Gospel Women’s Mission and a
large community lunch at Central Lutheran Church. Friday afternoon
the group spent time at New Horizon’s Ministry, a ministry for
street youth in Seattle.
The group served several times at the Union Gospel Men’s Mission,
toured the Seattle Needle Exchange, and closed out their time in
Seattle by serving about 200 people at Central Lutheran’s Community
Lunch.
The group stayed at All Pilgrims Community Church which is in a very
diverse Seattle neighborhood. A nearby large park provided many
opportunities to play basketball with neighborhood folks.
The group enjoyed touring the Seattle area. They were able to spend
time at the Pike Street Public Market and the Seattle Aquarium, eat
at Ivar’s Fish Bar, take a ferry ride to Bainbridge Island, go to
the top of the Space Needle, and see the Ballard Locks.
Highlights of the trip include eating a delicious shrimp supper that
was prepared and served by Pastor Paul’s aunt and uncle who live in
the Seattle area, and, being invited to a picnic at the home of one
of the parishioners of All Pilgrims.
Experiencing the uniqueness of and getting to know the people in the
neighborhood helped the participants dig deeper into their
relationship with God. While the group was in Seattle to serve,
they came away having received as much, if not more, as they gave. |
